Lion and Lichen Card

$10.00

The cat of many names… mountain lion, cougar, puma, and more…
This lion is depicted with Lobaria anthraspis, a lichen that I see grazed to deer-height near me. Thanks to Gowan Batist, I now know that there is an interesting interaction between lions and lichens. On the coast, because of international offshore oil drilling, there is a preponderance of mercury in the sea fog. Lichens are a) a food that deer favor and seek out, and b) heavy metal concentrators. Lions eat deer. Because of this, California’s coastal mountain lions bioaccumulate mercury in their systems and have high mercury concentrations compared to elsewhere. I thought this was an interesting ecological tidbit that would work well to show in a print.
